St. Michaels Middle High School  has announced a new partnership with United Sound, a nationwide nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide musical experiences to students of all ability levels.  SMMHS is the first school in the state of Maryland to join with this organization.

United Sound provides training, curriculum, and organizational resources.  The program pairs new musicians with peer mentor musicians who help them learn to read and perform music. “The goal is not to create master musicians,” said Christopher Flaherty, St. Michaels Middle High School Band Director.  “The goal is to foster peer interaction and social experiences through a performing ensemble.”

This year the program is being offered to Ms. Karen Hopkin’s class. So far four students have enrolled.  With three mentors for each new musician, a total of 20 students are participating.  The new musicians and mentors made their debut performing “Starfire March” with the 6th grade band at the SMMHS Holiday Concert.

The cost to register each new musician and mentor is $25, so the total cost for the program the year is $400. Through generous donations from the Talbot County Special Education Department, along with SMMHS Band Boosters and SMMHS Tri-M (the music honor society) the program is fully funded.
