At Talbot County Public Schools, the safety and well-being of all of our students and staff is our highest priority. The TCPS School Safety and Security department and individual schools work together in collaboration with a variety of public health and safety agencies. These partnerships aid in the implementation of prevention and awareness programs and assist students when emergency incidents occur. Some of the agencies involved in this collaborative effort are as follows:
• Talbot County Sherriff’s Office
• Easton Police Department
• St. Michaels Police Department
• Talbot County Department of Emergency Services
• Talbot County Health Department
The school district has a comprehensive Safe Schools program that is monitored by the Maryland State Department of Education and regularly reviewed and updated by each school’s Crisis Team. Members of these teams include school staff, Board of Education representatives, law enforcement, 1st responders from Emergency Management and local fire departments.
The school system routinely conducts the following emergency response procedure drills at all schools: Evacuation, Lockdown, Shelter in Place, Severe Weather Safe Area, and Drop, Cover and Hold, and Active Shooter drills.
TCPS has adopted the preparedness practices of the U.S Department of Homeland Security: Run, Hide, Fight and is providing this training at all TCPS facilities. Local law enforcement has been trained in the Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training (ALERRT) and continues to coordinate with TCPS regarding to preparedness implementation. TCPS also has full time School Resource Officers (SROs) assigned to support our schools through a partnership with the Talbot County Sheriff’s department.
