STUDENT AWARDS AND SCHOLARSHIPS

I. The Board of Education believes that student recognition should be an ongoing process. Recognition of students should be personal, generous, and individual. Students are often motivated to succeed when there is genuine recognition for their achievements.

II. The Board directs the Superintendent to foster an understanding among faculty and staff of the impact of student recognition. The Board further directs the Superintendent to develop regulations for the more formal recognition awards. such as valedictorian, salutatorian, and other awards and scholarships.

III. The aim of the awards system is to encourage as many pupils as possible to strive for high achievement in scholarship and school citizenship and build high self-esteem. In keeping with the above, general guidelines are as follows:

A. There should be a wide variety of awards of many types in order to stimulate

many pupils to grow and learn.

B. It is vital that different pupils have the opportunity to win the award from year

to year.

C. The types of awards should vary and be appropriate to the age and grade of

each student.

D. The factors deciding the award should be clearly specified and be as objective

as possible. Students should be made aware of the awards early in the school

year so that they can adequately prepare for inclusion.

E. The presentation of awards is the responsibility of each school.
