One School One Book
At Chapel District Elementary School, our goal is to instill a true love and passion for reading in our students from Pre-Kindergarten to 5th grade. One School One Book (OSOB) is a movement designed to engage an entire school community in the joy of reading. Each student, family, teacher, school administrator, custodian and bus driver will receive a copy of the selected book. Events such as plays, dances and family nights promote the OSOB program and encourage reading on all levels. We hope that when we have finished our books, the students continue to enjoy reading and also look forward to reading MORE!!!!!
We initiated our first OSOB program at White Marsh Elementary during the 2018-2019 school year with “According to Humphrey.” We had a kick-off assembly with our school and community, created activities for students, had volunteers read chapters aloud to our students, and had weekly trivia questions and prizes. We had a special bag for each classroom that contained a journal, stuffed hamster, and a copy of the book, and each weekend a designated student took this home to read and record all the fun they had with Humphrey. Our Grandparents’ Club was even involved! The students loved the experience, and the entire school community participated and fell in love with the books and with Humphrey. We are hoping to continue this initiative with two books for grades Kindergarten through 2nd and two books for 3rd through 5th. This is a great opportunity to have our students reading, writing and engaging with books on a daily basis at school and at home.
