Writers Block!

Writer’s Block! will use technology to establish a fluid, creative, and thriving writing community at Easton Elementary - Moton among students in all grades. Writing is a fundamental skill necessary for professional and self expression. There is a myriad of unheard young voices in the Moton Building. When meeting the requirements of the English Language Arts curriculum, writing can become a tedious task of “have-to’s” and informational explanations. While learning these skills is necessary, we must not forget about the power and positive energy that creative writing can have when students are able to express themselves through this medium. Creativity is a skill that with practice and rigor can grow and be improved in time. Writer’s Block! will have young authors work through the writing process to create poetry, plays, scripts, screenplays, novels, short stories, graphic novels-anything the students are inspired to do. The key to Writer’s Block! is the state of the art EESM Writing Lab that will be a creative space for students to explore their imaginations using computers, typewriters, and their iPads to not only write amazing narratives but to also create storyboards, posters, and publish their final products. We will work with selected groups of students during their lunch time on longer term writing projects. Teachers will identify students that have shown potential in creative writing and storytelling. There will also be various Writer’s Block! Showcase events where students’ families and the community will be invited to enjoy the finished student projects. Professional writers from the community will also be invited to mentor the young authors. The Writing Lab will also support the EESM Art of Storytelling Contest in the spring.
