ADMINISTERING MEDICATIONS TO STUDENTS

I. The Talbot County Board of Education believes that it is the parents' responsibility to administer medication to their children. Whenever possible, medication should be administered to school aged children by parents at home. When medically necessary to be administered during the school day, medication shall be administered by school personnel. Such procedures will include the following:

A. For ALL, medications, a written order by a physician or certified nurse practitioner

and a written endorsement by a parent/guardian will be required.

B. Medications will be kept in a locked cubicle or other safe place at school. The label

on the container will include the name and telephone number of the pharmacy, the

pupil's name, name of the physician, name of the drug, dosage, and when the

medication is to be given.

C. An accurate and confidential system of recordkeeping will be established for each

pupil receiving medication administered by school personnel.

D. Exempted from this policy are medications approved for emergency first aid use.

II. The Superintendent is hereby directed to develop and implement administrative

regulations for administering medications to students.
