ADVANCED PLACEMENT COURSES AND ADVANCED PLACEMENT PREPARATORY COURSES

I. The Board of Education supports the offering of Advanced Placement (AP) and Advanced Placement (AP) Preparatory courses for high school students.

II. The purpose of AP and AP Preparatory courses is to provide a rigorous program for students willing to accept the challenge of academic work that is more in-depth and/or more advanced than typically encountered in high school.

III. Students who plan to pursue a bachelor’s degree, particularly those who plan to enroll directly in a four-year institution of higher education upon graduation, should be encouraged to complete at least one AP course in an area of interest and/or academic strength while in high school.

IV. The Board recognizes that appropriate staff development must be provided for teachers of AP and AP preparatory courses. The Board further supports Vertical Teaming as a means of assuring rigorous performance standards and program articulation for grades six through twelve.

V. The Superintendent is directed to develop admission and recruitment guidelines for Advanced Placement courses and Advanced Placement Preparatory courses to assist students and parents with course selection so that students who participate in such courses have a high probability of meeting with success.

VI. Grades given for Advanced Placement and Advanced Placement Preparatory courses will be weighted to reflect the academic rigor of these courses.
